A Simple, Stunning, And Affordable Art Frame

A Simple, Stunning, And Affordable DIY frame for art made with plexi-glass and brass hardwareIf your anything like me you might fall in love with a piece of art work, only to get it and realize its a non-standard size. That's what happened when I ordered a map of Bohemia from Society6.com at 13" x 13".

Although there are tons of avenues to get a custom set frame made, its just not always within the budget.

These acrylic frames with brass hardware were my solution to non-standard sized prints (and to limiting the breakables in our toddler/doggie household). You can make them for any size print you would like whether it happens to be standard or like mine is an odd size.

Also, you can easily hang these from a thin piece of wire wrapped around the backs of the screws. Adding wire straight across the back or making it loose and having it triangle up to your nail would each look very sharp.

How to Assemble The Simple Frame

Once you have the materials and plexi glass cut to size this project is really easy to complete. Make sure to keep the liner on both sides of the acrylic while you work to minimize the chance of scratches.

We decided the width and length would extend 1" past the art, so we added those 2" to each of our dimensions.

Creating the Art Frame

  1. Line up the Plexi
  2. Clamp the pieces together (I just used paper binder clips)
  3. Mark & drill the hole (1/2" in from both sides)
  4. Clean drill holes
  5. Peel the liners off both sides
  6. Tape art to the back of the Plexi
  7. Attach screws, washers, and nuts through all four holes

**Normal ammonia based cleaners will damage & cloud the acrylic surface, using a microfiber cloth and soapy water is all you need.

The Stunning Results

These ended up being the perfect addition to our new barn board & leather shelf. I love that you can still get a peek through the acrylic when leaned up in a collection like this. Try it out, I promise it won't disappoint.

Reality Check

I've been stalking the artist behind the tree house print on Instagram for a few weeks (okay months), and asked Mitch if he would buy it for me. Having a treehouse has been an obsession of mine since we bought this little bungalow seven years ago. Our backyard includes a river inlet that would just be perfect for a treehouse!

If you are buying generic art, you might just want to grab a frame from Target or Ikea for around the same price. You can generally get a frame for 15-25$ in these sizes and spend the same amount with less of a time investment.

The Map of Bohemia I snagged (because I am in fact Bohemian on my mothers side) was significant to me because it reminds me of my grandmother, what a strong woman she was, and signifies mine & my daughters strength. It was made in a 13x13 which happens to be an odd size for getting a standard frame, so we opted to create our own.

** Bohemia is/was a real place, up until the end of WWI. After WWI it was dissolved and became a part of the Czech Republic. (Haverly is truly a mutt, being able to claim Irish, Scottish, Native American, German and last but certainly not the least % Polish in her bloodline).
